Transform-Projekt

A very important undertaking at the Chair of Ceramic Materials is the three-year project ‘Transforming Industrial Silicon Carbide and Silicon Nitride Ceramics Waste into Products towards Material & Environmental Sustainability’, which is being carried out as part of the 2+2 programme of the Indo-German Science & Technology Centre (IGSTC) and funded by the BMFTR. In addition to developing recycling methods for ceramic waste products, another main objective of the funding programme is to intensify cooperation between Germany and India. The companies STEREON Ceramics from Frankenblick (Germany) and CUMI from Hosur (India) are involved in the project, as are the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) in Chennai (India) and the Chair of Ceramic Materials at the University of Bayreuth.
As part of the regular meetings, two employees of the Chair of Ceramic Materials, Prof. Günter Motz and Jonas Kral, as well as Dr. Ulrich Degenhardt from STEREON Ceramics, travelled to India for a week to visit the host project partners Prof. Ravi Kumar from IITM in Chennai and Dr. Santanu Mandal from the industrial partner CUMI in Hosur.

The visit included a tour of the campus and laboratories at IIT Madras and the CUMI production facilities, as well as numerous discussions. In addition, a workshop on sustainability was held at IIT Madras, which was attended not only by the project partners but also by numerous individuals from the academic community at IIT Madras and other research institutions.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to IITM and CUMI for their outstanding hospitality, the inspiring discussions and the fruitful exchange.
